jDM 2 marked a transformative milestone for the download manager, introducing a complete redesign with new New Task and Inspector windows, smarter download organization, and greater automation through expanded Preferences. The update focused on giving users full visibility and control — from previewing downloads before they start to managing file destinations by type. jDM 2 established the modern workflow that shaped later versions, combining simplicity, precision, and reliability for a seamless macOS experience.

A major update introducing New Task, Inspector, and Preferences windows — bringing improved control, smarter file organization, and a more streamlined experience across the app.

New Task

  • Introduced a new New Task window to preview downloads before starting them.
  • Displays file icon, name, size, destination path, referrer, and description.
  • Allows users to edit file information directly before starting a download, offering better control and organization.
  • Streamlines download setup with direct metadata editing, improving workflow and file organization.
  • Added convenient options to Download Now, Download Later, or Cancel the task.

Inspector

  • Added a detailed Inspector (“Get Info”) window accessible from the toolbar or menu.
  • Displays comprehensive information about each download: icon, filename, file type, size, status, and last try date.
  • Supports direct editing of filename, description, referrer, and address fields.
  • Includes quick actions to Open, Show in Finder, and Move files.
  • Allows browsing between downloads using Previous and Next navigation buttons, automatically validated with the current list.
  • Provides “Cancel” and “OK” buttons for easy control and confirmation.

Main Window

  • Added new context menu options: Open With, Move Up, and Move Down.
  • Open With shows compatible applications and allows choosing any app from the Applications directory to open downloaded file directly from jDM.
  • Introduced “Get Info” and “Remove with Files” toolbar buttons for faster file management.
  • Added ability to associate referrers with individual downloads for better tracking and site context.
  • Remembers window state (fullscreen or not) and restores it automatically on launch.
  • Improved toolbar validation and persistence logic for better performance and consistency.
  • Users can now set priority for paused downloads to decide which resumes next.
  • Updated “Windows” menu to list all open windows for easier navigation.

Preferences

  • Introduced new download categories: Applications, Videos, Music, Images, and Other.
  • Each category allows defining file types and a dedicated save directory.
  • Added options to Shut Down Mac, Sleep, or Quit jDM automatically after all downloads complete.
  • Added new behavioral options for improved customization:
    • Always open in fullscreen mode
    • Hide extensions of completely downloaded files
    • Warn before removing downloads
    • Resume existing file when duplicate link is added
  • Toolbar section selection is now remembered — preferences reopen to the last viewed pane.
  • Improved window positioning and synchronization of toolbar titles with main menu entries.

Downloader

  • Enhanced reliability in handling resume data for interrupted downloads.
  • Improved pause and resume logic to maintain download integrity.

Application

  • Performance improvements throughout the app, including download persistence and UI responsiveness.
  • General bug fixes and refinements for better stability.
